Old Bakery Stone Hut
Hello there, welcome to the Old Bakery. My name is Dennis Wheatley, although I am more often called the “Old Baker”.
My wife Margaret and myself began the Old Bakery in 1997 at Wirrabara. In July 2005 we transferred the business to our property at Stone Hut, just 7 kms. south of Wirrabara and 7kms north of Laura, on the Main North Road. We live on the premises and all the baking is done daily on the premises.
The original cottage was built in 1874 and was the site of the blacksmith’s shop. Stone Hut was named after the old stone hut erected on the banks of the Rocky River about 1km west of the township. This hut still survives and is a relic of the mailcoach days. It was a stopover place for teamsters busily carting wood from the forest to the mines in Burra, and returning with stores for the Wirrabara and Melrose communities.
We are very proud of our region and showcase an abundant range of local produce such as olive oils, olives, honeys, jams, relishes, chillies, olive oil soaps, and much more, all produced in the area. Southern Flinders is now a recognised wine region and we showcase and sell our regions wines.
Stone Hut is only two and a half hours drive north of Adelaide on the Main North Road through Clare, in the beautiful Southern Flinders Ranges. Click on “Our Region” for more details about this beautiful part of South Australia.
We are open 7 days and offer take away and dine in facilities in our lovely verandah restaurant. All our products are hand made to a recipe and we are famous for our chunky steak pies, “best in the universe” so our customers tell us. Our range of cakes and slices are chosen for their old fashion style, more like Grandma used to make. Click on “Products” for more details.
We have EFTPOS facilities, public toilets and can accommodate bus or coach loads of up to 50 people. Stone Hut and it’s surrounding rural townships is a great place to spend a weekend, so why not take a drive up here and discover us!
